SPORT: Over 1 000 Pta kids enjoy cricket festival

More than 1 600 children from Pretoria took part in the KFC Mini-Cricket festival at the Tshwane University of Technology main campus on Saturday.

The young cricket players represented schools from all over Pretoria.

KFC Mini-Cricket spokesperson Shawn Bellugi said more than 120 000 kids were currently involved in KFC Mini-Cricket across the country.

“About 16 dedicated provincial KFC Mini-Cricket festivals are held annually,” he said.

“These festivals see kids from every corner of their respective provinces come together to get active through playing cricket.”

During Saturday’s festival, the kids played under the supervision of 120 coaches and educators.

Protea players Mangaliso Mosehle and Dwaine Pretorius were also on hand, coaching the kids and sharing some of their wisdom.

The schools came from Centurion, Laudium, Mamelodi, Soshanguve and Hammanskraal.

The Pretoria Muslim Trust Sunni School and Arethabeng Primary School were joined by schools with special needs such as Sunrise Primary School.

Bellugi explained the rules of the game: each kid gets to bowl six balls and faces six balls. Every kid gets a chance to field in each fielding position.

“The format is ideal for introducing kids to the game of cricket as it allows for participation by all the players.”

KFC Mini-Cricket is one of the longest-running sports development programmes in the world.
