A potential expansion of the Gautrain network by an extra 150 kilometres, which would see new routes for Pretoria and Johannesburg, is being considered.
The government-owned entity was currently seeking funds to increase its current fleet by 50 percent, according to Gautrain spokesperson Dr Barbara Jansen.
The expansion would see these new links and station in the Gautrain network:
– On the link between Jabulani via Cosmo City and Samrand to Mamelodi (stations include Roodepoort, Little Falls, Fourways, Sunninghill, Olievenhoutsbosch, Irene, Tshwane East and Hazeldean).
– The link between Sandton and Cosmo City has a station at Randburg.
– On the link between Rhodesfield and Boksburg there will be a station at East Rand Mall and possible link-up with the OR Tambo International Airport Midfield terminal development.
– A future link from Cosmo City to Lanseria Airport.
There are also plans for the construction of a second depot.
Jansen said a feasibility study conducted in 2017 showed that the extension of the Gautrain rail network will provide significant transport-related benefits to the province.
“The cost of doing nothing in the province will lead to major road congestion in 2037,” said Jansen.
“At which stage cars will travel at an average of 15 kilometres per hour due to doubling in car growth.”
