Police vests, blue light found in Moreleta hijackers’ car

The scene in Moreleta Park shortly after the attempted hijacking.

Police bulletproof vests, reflector jackets, a blue light and two R5 rifles were recovered in an abandoned vehicle in Tembisa on Thursday morning, shortly after it was used in a failed hijacking attempt in front of a creche in Moreleta Park.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller said four or five men attempted to hijack a black BMW X5 at the corner of Rubenstein and Helois roads around 08:00.

The would-be hijackers were driving a white BMW.

Miller said the men fired two shots in their unsuccessful attempt to steal the vehicle and then fled the scene.

It was believed the men were posing as police officers when they pulled over the driver. No one was injured.

Police recovered the abandoned vehicle in Tembisa shortly afterwards and found the police clothing and firearms inside.

Police are investigating.

Santi Steinmann, Netcare 911 spokesperson, said paramedics treated an eyewitness at the scene for shock.
