The law takes to the streets

Tshwane metro police have arrested 88 people in ‘Operation Fiela’ on Thursday in Marabastad and Sunnyside in order to address illegal activities.

Arrests included 31 illegal immigrants, 37 pedestrian creating a danger, two for common robbery, six for the possession of drugs, three for being drunk in public, five for drunken driving, two for assault and one for theft.

Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the operation included departments such as home affairs, transport, fire and electricity.

“This was a clean-up operation aimed to achieve the city’s strategic objective of building a safe and secure community. Metro police searched 63 business premises for illegal activities and 31 other businesses for bylaw contravention,” Mahamba said.

He said the metro and other role players searched 200 vehicles and 666 people. Nearly 55 trading goods and 40 counterfeit goods were confiscated during the operation.

Metro police issued 66 notices for bylaw contraventions and two notices were issued to road offenders. “Four vehicles and four food trailers were impounded and 480 illegal advertisement boards were removed,” Mahamba said.

Democratic Alliance counsellors Elma Nel, Yvonne Dzumba and Maggie Erasmus joined in the operation. Nel took the day shift and Dzumba and Erasmus took to the streets during the night.

“We are extremely proud of the way the metro police and various departments handled the situation,” Nel said.
