Battle of the Chefs

Winning Team, Amy Marais, Duncan Binns and Caitlin Manley.

Saturday brought many culinary enthusiasts together at Spar’s Battle of the Chefs, which took place at Pretoria Girls High School.

The stakes were high as culinary skills were put to the test. Pretoria Boys High headmaster Tony Reeler faced off against Pretoria Girls High headmistress Karen du Toit in a cook-off of champions.

This year brought a new twist to the already prominent event, in that the competition was extended to not only include moms and dads and their daughters, but also teachers and boys from their sister school Pretoria Boys High school.

The challenge was set, and cooking enthusiasts were given the task of conjuring up culinary masterpieces.

Round one was at 08:30-09:30 and teachers and learners were paired together.

The second round was from 10:30-11:30, with Pretoria Girls High girls paired with their parents.

Round three saw Pretoria girls paired with Pretoria boys in grouped teams.

The challenge was to come up with creative dishes in a limited time and with limited utensils in order to make it to the next round.

The dishes were judged by local chefs from leading culinary schools in Pretoria: Steyns’ Culinary School, Prue Leith Chefs Academy and Kelkiewyn Food and Wine.

In the final round, a new twist was added, and contestants had to use a secret ‘hot’ ingredient to create their dishes. What the girls didn’t know was that this ‘hot’ ingredient was one of the boys from Boys High.

Although everyone was deemed a winner, it was group number 27 who took first prize.

Amy Marais, Duncan Binnsand and Caitlin Manley walked away with Battle of the Chefs bragging rights.  Second place went to team number 21: Schanze’ Tomlinson, Lara van Zyl and Antony Forrester.
