Police were led to a drug kingpin and seized drugs to the value of R50 000 at a drug lab in Sunnyside on Tuesday afternoon.

The police K9 unit and Sunnyside police were led to the lab by a man whom they arrested earlier in Marabastad when he tried to escape arrest for selling nyaope.

When the man was interrogated he agreed to lead police to the kingpin of the operation.

The unit was taken to a block of flats in Sunnyside on the corner of Pretorius and Leyds streets where they found the drugs.

More police arrived on the scene as the kingpin denied any wrong-doing.

Forensics arrived to investigate as police continued questioning the kingpin.

Heroine, dagga, nyaope packets and ten rand notes were lying around. There were also small plastic bags used to package nyaope all over the floor.

Condoms filled with substances were found in a bowl and police said these were commonly used in trafficking.

Sunnyside police spokesperson sergeant Asnath Malatsi said the kingpin would be detained at the Sunnyside police station pending further investigation.
