Former Tukkie survives brick through window on N2

“I saw the brick, but was powerless as I heard the bang of the window shattering and could feel the brick hitting my left arm. I immediately knew, without a doubt, what had happened.”

This is how 34-year-old former Tukkie, Wayne Champion, describes the fearful moment when a brick was thrown through the windshield of his Volkswagen Touareg, narrowly missing his pregnant fiancée, but hitting him in the left arm.

“I knew their intention was to kill us,” said Champion.

Champion was driving down the N2 from Scottburgh to Port Edward on 2 January when at 21:00 a brick thrown from a bridge entered what he described as “our safe place”.

Champion’s fiancée Marina Kent, who is six months pregnant with their daughter Sarah, first thought someone had shot Champion.

“She screamed that I had been shot, but I had no idea of the extent of the damage, but I did not care. My mission was clear, protect [my fiancée] at whatever cost. That brick was not going to defeat me and allow perpetrators into our world,” he said.

Thinking quickly, Kent wrapped Champion’s arm in her scarf as she rushed him to Margate hospital, a 34 minute drive.

“I felt myself drifting, wondering if this is my time. My eyes slowly closed as the blood oozed out of my gaping wounds,” he said.

When they arrived at the emergency room, Champion was quickly treated.

He recalls sitting in the emergency room asking in his head why someone would do it to him.

He was rushed into surgery. Fortunately he had no broken bones. He however, had severe lacerations to his entire left arm.

Thankfully, Champion has since been discharged and is recovering well.

Champions says it is his brave fiancée who saved his life. He calls her his Queen.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating the attack.
