Thirty years for wounding metro cops

A man was jailed for 30 years last week for shooting and wounding two Tshwane metro police officers.

Nelson Xolani Hlatshwayo (37) was sentenced in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday after he was convicted of attempted murder and armed robbery.

Gauteng community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane welcomed the sentence and applauded the criminal justice system.

“An attack on any member of the law enforcement agency is an attack on the state. This warrants harsh and decisive action on the perpetrator,” said MEC Nkosi-Malobane.

“Though justice has been served, we are acutely aware that it will not replace the pain and trauma that the officers suffered. We do however hope that it will bring closure on the part of the officers.”

In January last year, two metro police officers were wounded in the lower body when seeking to give a hand after a taxi in Bronkhorstspruit had apparently broken down.

It soon turned out that the vehicle had been hijacked.

Passengers inside the vehicle screamed as the officers approached, causing the hijackers to shoot at the policemen.

Hlatshwayo was later arrested for the crime.
