BRT to change face of Menlyn area

The project to accommodate the bus rapid transit (BRT) service from Menlyn to January Masilela Drive constitutes a massive undertaking which includes the building of a bus station and an underpass in Menlyn.

Construction, which will give the area around the Menlyn shopping centre a new and modern look, is expected to be completed by September next year.

The site for the A Re Yeng service was handed over to the contractor on 3 May, and work had already started, Tshwane mayoral spokesperson Blessing Manale confirmed.

Although all attempts would be made to prevent traffic disruptions, motorists were warned last week they should brace themselves for increased congestion on Atterbury Road between January Masilela Drive and Lois Avenue.

“Traffic delays will be experienced during the anticipated 16-month construction period,” Manale said, confirming the warning issued by DA spokesperson on spatial development, Siobhan Muller.

Manale said detailed information and maps would be made available to the media soon in which the exact nature of the project would be explained.

He said among others, construction entailed an eastbound 20 met20-metreete bridge, two-way BRT lanes on the west-bound carriageway and three east-bound traffic lanes.

A quarter-link to connect the Menlyn Maine development to Atterbury Road would also be built, as well as new culverts and the extension of existing culverts, Manale said.

“A Menlyn BRT station underpass next to Menlyn shopping centre’s main entrance will also be constructed.”

He said walkways would be improved and that street lighting and traffic lights at the affected intersections would also be installed.
